And we're off....

Traveling usually doesn’t get me to riled up. But Wednesday was a little different. I was packing for one of the most talked about music festivals of our time. There hasn’t been anticipation like this in the hippie community since the invention of glow sticks. With the G6 all packed up, I scooped Connor at 11am and after a few more stops (naturally) we headed north to Manitowok to board the USS Badger. The ride was nice. We stopped at a nice little liquor store. Scratch that… it was gigantic. It looked like a Midas with a 10,000 square foot warehouse attached to it. After some terrible directions to the Carferry (yes, its one word) we arrived at the Badger and waited for the RV.

I felt like I was waiting for my Road Rules RV to come pick me up. Connor and I were standing on the side of the road with our bags, watching the turn in the road for the fine piece of the American dream to rear its 31 feet of goodness. It was a good thing we were on time because the FOUR minutes we had to load the RV before the ship set sail was PLENTY of time. Last minute decisions were made and some items were left behind. My didgeridoo made it. The best part about arriving at 12:56 for a 1:00 departure on a Carferry is that when you’re the last car on, you’re the first car off! LIFO bitches.

Lets meet our passengers:

Connor: The resourceful one. Always finding a better way to do things, essential on the trip.
Brendan: For all intents and purposes, the leader of the RV. It was his vision, dedication, and oh… he put the down payment on the RV.
Adam: The driver. Adam was Dad when it came to driving and navigating. He was really dialed in.
Matt (not me): The intern. This 18 year old veteran was getting his feet wet for his first festival. He really impressed me.
Thregg/Three/Me: Wayne.

The cruise was nice. This boat is HUGE. I sort of felt like we were going across the Atlantic on a voyage. Or maybe that was just because the Badger’s top speed is a whopping 16 MPH. Grapes and String cheese gave us the sustenance we needed for the trip. There was no short supply of $4 Tequila Sunrises to prep us for the night ahead. About 3 hours into the journey, the five of us split up and found our own little sanctuaries. Unfortunately, finding cover from the drunk middle age, bald, red head, with black jean shorts and a cut off was difficult. We met a few other Rothberries on the boat. Chill people, naturally, and we hang a good time hanging out. More on them later.

As the ship rolled in to Ludington, Michigan, shouts of “Dad’s Home” rang clear for the land lovers to hear. The doors opened to the Car storage area and we were off with the RV. After finally putting away some food and personal items, we could smell rothbury. Before we could get any closer, we’d have to make some essential stops…
